Sometimes it`s all about the gamble and the bag of money which comes along with winning. In this film, everybody`s got his plan and God gets to be whoever is empowered in a certain moment (sometimes this happens more or less by chance). You get to see life as a neighbourhood where brothers are enemies and dogs are the only reliable beings around, where love finds its way to fight and fake for nothing, just to bear one more day until the truth comes out, until everything faces misery.
Here Inarritu interlaces three stories that boil into the thrill of life as a carnival* which ends into many kinds of bruises or into many kinds of forms and colors that flesh can take. Its main focus is somewhere in between portraying the hopeful and the hopeless, including a strong reference upon Cain and Abel`s biblical myth. In the end, it gets to be about constructing what one could have been or about deconstructing what one doesn`t want to remember; this thing being strongly outlined by the quote which ends the film: ”We are also what we have lost.”
Spending two hours and a half watching it is not going to be wasted time, but probably a cruel reminder upon how human interactions can be/ get.
*Life as a carnival – La vida es un carnaval, a song by Celia Cruz, which is part of the film`s soundtrack.
