Smida Jazz Festival is an international event dedicated to avant-garde jazz, which takes place in Smida, right in the heart of Apuseni Natural Park. Its third edition will unfold during 17th-19th of August, during which you can refuel yourself engaging in educational and recreational day activities and you can enjoy the concerts of artists like Spirit Cave, Kimmo Pohjonen, Portico Quartet, Sons of Kemet and others.
Kimmo Pohjonen, Finland’s most vibrant and daring accordionist, has revolutionized accordion music, sound and performance with an international career going back to the mid 1990s. Pohjonen has developed his own custom made electrified instrument that includes effects, MIDI and other electronics. His recordings feature dynamic compositions with bold, new and awe-inspiring accordion sounds while his performances feature surround sound and light show combined to make a unique and captivating experience.
He performs worldwide in many ensembles and projects such as Kimmo Pohjonen Skin trio, Uniko with Kronos Quartet or Proton String Quartet, KTU, Bright Shadow, Pohjonen Alanko, Breath, Uumen with French drummer Eric Echampard, Murder Ballads, Accordion Wrestling, Earth Machine Music and more. At #smidajazz2018 he’ll perform as solo artist, on Saturday, the 18th of August.
The documentary film about Pohjonen, Soundbreaker, premiered in 2012, won the “Prix de la Création /Award for Creativity” at FIFA Montreal. It is an eighty-six minute music documentary film about Kimmo Pohjonen, featuring interviews, story, photos, music, video and archive material from Pohjonen’s thirty-five year career in music.
